The Power of starting small

CHRIST EVERJOYOUS ASSEMBLY

Sunday 28th October, 2012

Speaker:           Deacon Olayinka Moses
Topic:              The Power of starting small
Texts:               Zachariah 4:8-10; Matthew 13:31 & 32; Luke 19:12-28, Job 8:7

INTRODUCTION
The choice of my topic today, though for the general good of all, may be more specific to our graduating students here today. I want to begin by thanking God for his unending love and mercy over of you these past years as students. Now that one face of your life is fading off another is being opened.

THE NEW BEGINNING
Everything in life has a beginning, which often signifies the smallest part of its development process. As you plan to start new ideals in all facets of life I will like to remind you of the power of beginning from a humbly or perhaps the smallest point. The power in small things can be huge. Believe me everything big was once small. In fact only small things can grow. A number of Bible illustrations exist to explain this concept. God only created Adam and then Eve (Genesis 1:27), but today the world’s population is estimated at over 7.048 Billion people. From small things come great things surely!
My message today is to simply steer your faith and commitment to begin that idea today. Whatever, it is you have been dreaming of, make effort to start now.  Waiting till when you put all details together may kill it. Zachariah 4:10a questions “ For who has despised the day of small things?we are warned against looking down on our little things in this passage.
Again, consider the parable of our Lord on the Mustard seed in Matthew 13: 31 & 32 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, 32 which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
The entire story explains the fact that from small seed can grow a huge tree and eventually a forest.

LIFE APPLICATION
I know we all have big dreams of where we want to work, who we want to marry and even the type of car and house we will eventually buy. Dreams are good and in fact ideal for real life’s pursuit. However, I will advice you start with the little time, money, talent or that small job and grow it into your real dream. The Lord Jesus in another parable of the talents explains how a master’s dealings with one of his servants negated this rule of small beginning. This servant came to his master with only the talent his master had originally entrusted to him. He did not increase his master’s money, but offered a feeble excuse for his conduct. He told his master that he was a harsh and cruel man, a man who was over demanding, and expected gain where he had not labour. He contended that this is why he was afraid to take a risk with any kind of investment. And so he simply hid the money, and now he returned it, without any gain. The master rebuked this slave for being evil and lazy. He took his talent from him, gave it to the one who earned ten, and cast this fellow into outer darkness, where there was weeping and gnashing of teeth (Luke 19:12-28). Increase in life comes with managing small efforts.

CONCLUSION
The crux of my message is simple-nothing is too small to start with. Just get started!

VALEDICTORY SPEECH FOR 2011/2012 GRADUATING CLASS

VALEDICTORY SPEECH FOR 2011/2012 GRADUATING CLASS OF THE
DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING, UNIVERSITY OF JOS

Delivered on Wednesday, 24th October, 2012 by

Olayinka Moses

Beginning today you will no longer need to wake up in a rush for lectures as has been the practice in the past four years or so. However, something you must do for yourself is to assume responsibility without being coerced or threatened to. You must seek the best for yourself and your immediate society through discipline, hard work and commitment. Use all your experiences from the University (i.e. the good, the bad and the ugly) to make yourself a better person.

You are all special fellows in your right. Seek to be your own version of perfection, learn from people but never become any other person than your original self.  One thing I will like to share with you today is the fact that life’s journey is not sometimes as smooth as we plan it. Some of you particularly the least expected ones may turn out the stars of the class, others with hard work, commitment and dedication may have shaky start, but in all don’t be perturbed you can only be late but you will surely get there. Remember Success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It is courage that counts in issues of life.

Set your priorities right from today. If you want to work in a particular place begin to dream and prepare yourself for it as avowed by Goethe “Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."Discipline yourself in the area of finance, avarice and lust. These three are the world most popular “killer of dreams”. You may need to make new friends from now- which is normal but be sure who you choose as a company. Make learning a continuous attitude; even if we keep you here for another four years we will still not be able to teach everything thing. The enchantment is for you to continue to improve on your intellectual prowess using what you have learned from us as a platform.

I want to sincerely appreciate God for the opportunity He afforded us to meet each other in our life time. Again, I must say that teaching your class these past years have indeed been a pleasure; one memory I will keep and cherish for long is that “Saturday we all went out for jogging”. I thank you all for your support to me and other lectures while you studied here. I pray you find same and even better help in all facets of your life. If I pretend that I got all my decisions right while working with you; I will be grossly wrong. Permit me to humbly seek your sincere exculpation if you considered any act of mine to have hurt you, but believe me it was all done out of a good motive.

Please remember your University and contribute to it when it is financially well with you. Cherish your classmates and carry each other along for as long as you can. Respect people you meet in this life, you can’t be sure who you will need next. Till we meet again in other facets of life remain good ambassadors of our great Department. As affirmed by Williams Shakespeare “Parting is such a sweet sorrow”; its sweet because I know you must go for the greater mission ahead and a sorrow because I will miss every moment we spent together.

Finally, I pray our Good Lord keep you in perfect health and peace. May He cause his favour to be upon you and bless the works of your hands.

God bless you!
God bless the Department of Accounting, University of Jos!!
And God bless our great country!
Thank you

BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

CHRIST EVERJOYOUS ASSEMBLY

Sunday 21st October, 2012

Speaker:         Deacon Olayinka Moses
Topic:             BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
Texts:              Jeremiah 1:4, 11 & 12, Genesis 1:26; 15:5
OVERVIEW
It is a pleasure to continue on the series I started a fortnight ago on the 7 Habits of Highly effective people which is culled from Stephen R. Covey book. Today I will attempt to x-ray the second of these habits and relate it to our spiritual race towards eternity.
INTRODUCTION
Beginning with the end in mind perhaps explains the fact that all life’s issues begins with a carefully thought through plan of what the final outcome will be. The implication here is that all things are created twice – the first which is the mental creation and then the physical or second creation. A perfect example of this is the process of building a house which begins with a thought that is translated into an architectural plan and then the real physical structure. Even God our creator began with a thought and mental image of man before the physical creation was accomplished (Genesis 1:26).

APPLICATION
The most fundamental application of this Habit is to begin each day with an image or picture of what the end of your life would be. Since heaven is our goal as Christians it will only be appropriate to apply this Habit with eternity in mind. Hence, all issues of our lives will be based on the final destination we hope to reach-which Heaven. The choices we make, how we relate with others and above all our personal commitment to kingdom matters.
The best way Covey tried to depict everybody’s end from their beginning is to make the people imagine being at their own funeral where people would be asked to speak about what they have done right and all errors they made while on earth. This search for fulfillment at the end our life journey will perhaps spur us to do good to all men and seek that ultimate goal of making heaven at all cost.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
The sum of this habit is for you to use your active imagination to have a mental frame of what you want physically in life. You will agree with me also that spiritual things follow the same order. More often God call on men to visualize their dreams and if they want to see it come to pass. God in the bid to get Abraham to understand this principle visualization asked him to imagine the number of his offspring by attempting to count the stars of the sky (Genesis 15:5). The moral there is that until Abraham was able to conceptualize his children, he would never have them.

By

OLAYINKA MOSES

A lecture delivered on the 18th of October, 2012 at Jossy
Royal Hotel, Jos. For the Graduating Class of 2011/2012 Business Administration, University of Jos.

PREFACE

There are some events in life that happens only once in a person’s lifetime. One of such is graduation; this is even so because this may be the last some of us may see each other.

Hence the need to give our very best to all now that we have one more chance to do that.

Another issue of concern at this stage of life to the average student is the question of what “next after school?”

 “WHAT NEXT”?

• What job will I get?
• When will I get it?
• Am I going to be successful?
• What if I fail?
• Who can I go to for help and support? Etc.

THE TIPS

Begin Small but desire greatness (Why join the Army if you can’t be a
General?).
Set your goals for the next five years
Imbibe the “Work Factor”
Never Give up
Seek to know only the problems and attempt to fix them
Remember the “GOD FACTOR”
